frequently asked saline removal questions

What is saline tattoo removal?

Saline tattoo/pigment removal is the process of depositing a very concentrated saline solution over the treatment area which lifts the undesired pigment into the epidermal layer of the skin whereby through the natural process of osmosis the pigment will get trapped in the scab that forms. When the scab eventually falls off then some of the pigment will be removed with it.

The saline solution used is a non-acid, high salt based, fruit seed extract removal product.

Am I eligible to undergo the saline removal procedure?

Please refer to the terms and policies to see if you meet the criteria for this procedure as well as submit an inquiry form.

Will it hurt?

Plenty of topical numbing is used to keep you comfortable but it will not be any more painful than when the tattoo was applied. It is essential that the pre-care instructions are followed to reduce any additional discomfort.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required to completely lift the pigment, or get it to a point where correction can be performed, will be dependent on factors such as:

  • how deep the pigment was initially implanted
  • how saturated the pigment is
  • the type of pigment that was used
  • how many sessions of tattooing were performed
  • your body's natural healing cycle

We cannot provide you with a definitive number of sessions however generally an average of 3-4 sessions may be required.

Black tattoos, or carbon pigments, are harder to remove and may require more sessions.

What is the healing process and downtime after treatment?

We must allow a MINIMUM of 8 weeks between each removal session.

Immediately after the procedure the treatment area will appear pink and may last for a few weeks which is completely normal. Once the area starts to heal, a scab will form which is a very important part of the healing process. The longer you can keep the scab on and intact the better your removal results will be!

How is it different to laser removal?

The biggest difference with saline removal is that it lifts the pigment up and out of the skin unlike laser removal where the pigment is broken up and pushed deeper into the skin to be removed by the body's lymphatic and waste system.

Laser can be costly and extremely painful and cannot guarantee that all coloured pigments can be removed. Depending on the technicians laser machine, laser may only be able to remove certain colours whereas saline is not restricted by colour or depth. Please note if your tattoo has a lot of titanium dioxide laser may actually turn thr tattoo black/grey.

When saline removal is peformed correctly it will not damage the skin whereas the high intensity of laser may cause scar tissue. And laser can remove eyebrow hair!

When can I get a new tattoo over the treatment area?

You need to allow the skin a minimum of 8 weeks to fully heal before booking a cosmetic tattoo procedure over the removal area.

Another reason saline removal may be a better option than laser if you are considering a correctional or cover up tattoo is that when performed properly saline removal will not permanently damage skin tissue like lasers may and so the correctional tattoo may not be successful due to scar tissues.

Are there any risks?

With any skin penetration procedures there will be risks involved however very minimal. Infection, development of hyper/hypopigmentation, and the possibility of the skin rejecting the solution are all possible risks and side effects.
